My Next Book

Experience My Next Book, a revolutionary book recommendation platform that aims to banish the book hangover forever. This assignment dives deep into the UI/UX design process behind My Next Book, exploring how I harnessed the power of data, user insights, and intuitive design to create a personalized literary journey for every reader.

  • Personalized recommendations: Forget generic algorithms, our AI confidant delves into your reading history, preferences, and even your friends' tastes to curate a bookshelf just for you. No more wading through endless lists, just serendipitous discoveries around every corner.

  • Social reading haven: Share your bookish adventures with your friends! Post reviews, discuss chapters, and react to quotes, all within the app. It's like a book club meets a literary Instagram, fostering vibrant conversations and shared joy.

Research

Though there is minimal data present regarding what percentage of people use book recommendation websites, here are some insights

  • A 2012 study by the Pew Research Center found that 28% of people aged 16 and older in the US relied on online bookstores or websites for book recommendations.

  • A 2019 survey by Bowker found that 44% of book buyers in the US used online reviews or recommendations to choose their next book.

  • A 2023 report by Statista stated that Goodreads, a popular book recommendation platform, had 50 million active monthly users.

Survey

To gain user perspectives on book recommendations, I conducted a survey using Google Forms with 15 potential users.

The given images show the responses of the potential users.

Interview

To gain a more profound insight into the preferences and desires of book readers regarding recommendations, I conducted interviews with three avid book enthusiasts. Here is the major questions i posed to them-

  1. What challenges do you currently face when trying to discover new books to read?

  2. How do you typically decide whether to read a book or not?

  3. How frequently do you use book recommendation apps or platforms?

  4. How important are personalized book recommendations to you?

  5. Which factors do you consider most when looking for book recommendations? (Genres, authors, moods, etc.)

  6. Do you use any features on existing book recommendation apps that you find particularly helpful or frustrating?

  7. What features would encourage you to share your book reviews on a platform?

  8. Are you comfortable connecting with friends on a book-related app? Why or why not?

  9. How do you feel about integrating social media with a book recommendation and review app?

  10. What concerns, if any, do you have regarding privacy and social integration within the app?

  11. Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences with book recommendation apps?

Competitor analysis

Key Insights From Research

  • Users prioritize understanding a book's quality and relevance before investing their time. The availability of comprehensive and trustworthy reviews greatly influences users' decisions on whether to read a particular book.

  • Users express a strong desire for personalized book recommendations. Factors like genres, authors, mood, and other personal preferences significantly impact their reading choices.

  • There is a notable interest among users to connect with friends over books, fostering a sense of community. However, users show reluctance towards integrating the app with other social media platforms, possibly due to concerns about privacy or the desire for a dedicated book-centric space.

User Personas

Design solutions

I endeavored to design an app featuring two primary sections:

  1. A dedicated space for Book Recommendations, focusing on genres and trending books.

  2. A social platform where users can connect, post reviews, and engage in discussions, resembling a social media platform for book enthusiasts.

Let's dive into the screens...

Flash Screens

It's the first visual encounter users have with the app, making it a valuable opportunity for branding and setting the tone for the user experience. It typically displays the app's logo, name, or other iconic design elements.

I have attempted to leverage the flash screens to communicate the value proposition of the app.

While designing a signup screen for any app, incorporating options for a username, password, and social media login methods (such as Apple ID, Google, or Facebook) offers several benefits for the user experience:

  1. User Convenience:

    • Social Media Logins: Allowing users to sign up or log in with their existing social media accounts (Apple ID, Google, or Facebook) eliminates the need to create and remember new credentials. This streamlines the onboarding process, making it quick and convenient.
  2. Reduced Friction:

    • Single Sign-On (SSO): Offering multiple login options reduces the friction associated with account creation. Users can choose the method that suits them best, enhancing the overall ease of use.
  3. Username Option: Including a username option allows users to personalize their accounts. This can contribute to a sense of ownership and identity within the app, fostering a more engaging and personalized experience.

Onboarding

Selecting preferred genres and reviewing past read books can significantly enhance the overall user experience in a book recommendation app. Here's how:

  1. Personalized Recommendations:

    • Genre Preferences: By allowing users to select their preferred genres, the app can provide highly personalized book recommendations tailored to the user's specific interests. This customization increases the likelihood of users discovering books that align with their tastes.
  2. Time-Saving and Relevant Suggestions:

    • Past Read Books: The app can analyze a user's history of read books to understand their literary preferences. This historical data helps in offering more accurate and relevant suggestions, saving users time and ensuring they receive recommendations that are more likely to resonate with them.

Homescreen

The home screen has various sections tailored according to user needs. Here is a breakdown of each section, presented point by point:

  • App Header: The app's header incorporates a profile icon, preference/filter icon, search, and notification bar. This design enhances user navigation for a seamless experience.

  • Trending This Week: Users can discover books that are gaining traction and popularity among other readers. This can introduce them to titles they might not have encountered through traditional recommendation methods.

  • You May Like: While considering the user's preferences, the "You May Like" section can introduce books that are similar but not identical to the user's past reads. This promotes the discovery of new titles and genres, expanding the user's reading horizons.

  • Recommended by your Friends: Recommendations from friends add a personal touch to the app's suggestions. The system can analyze books that friends have tagged the user in, providing tailored recommendations aligned with the user's social circle.

  • **Newly Launched:**Users can stay updated with the latest releases in their favorite genres, fostering a sense of excitement and anticipation. This encourages users to explore new content regularly.

  • Popular in specific genres: Users are presented with books that specifically align with their preferred genres, ensuring a higher degree of relevance in the recommendations. This focused approach enhances the chances of users discovering books they are likely to enjoy.

Connect Section

This segment of the application offers an experience akin to social media platforms. Here, you can share your reviews and thoughts, tag friends, engage in discussions through comments, and even repost content from others – creating a dynamic and interactive community around your reading experiences.
